Days after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat called Ram Mandir's 'Pran Pratishtha' ceremony "True Independence of India," the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday, lashed out at the RSS chief and accused him of committing treason'. 

Rahul Gandhi urged people to "stop listening to the nonsense" and called Bhagwat's comments an "act of treason," which "would have him arrested and tried in any other country."

Rahul Gandhi was addressing an event to mark the inauguration of the new Congress headquarters in Delhi.

"Mohan Bhagwat has the audacity to inform the nation every 2-3 days what he thinks about the independence movement and the Constitution. What he said yesterday is treason because it is stating that the Constitution is invalid, fight against the British was invalid. He has the audacity to say this publicly; in any other country, he would be arrested and tried. To say that India did not get independence in 1947 is an insult to every single Indian, and it's about time we stop listening to this nonsense that these people think they can just keep parroting out and shouting and screaming," the Raebareli MP said.

Mohan Bhagwat's "True Independence of India" remark

RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat had on Monday said the date of Ram temple consecration in Ayodhya should be celebrated as "Pratishtha Dwadashi," as the "true independence" of Bharat, which faced "parachakra" (enemy attack) for several centuries, was on this day.

``After India got political independence from the British on August 15, 1947, a written Constitution was made according to the path shown by that specific vision, which comes out of the self of the country, but the document was not run according to the spirit of the vision at that time, Bhagwat said.

The Sangh chief mentioned a meeting with former President Pranab Mukherjee at a time when the issue of 'Ghar Wapsi' (return of converted people to their original religion) figured in Parliament.

Mukherjee also pointed out that "5,000 years of Indian tradition has taught us secularism," the RSS chief added.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also accused RSS of not believing in `constitution and national flag' . "The people who are in power today do not salute the tricolour, do not believe in the national flag, do not believe in the Constitution, and they have a completely different vision of India than we do. They want India to be run by a shady, hidden, secret society,'' he said.
